How long does it take to create a painting? This has to be one of the most common things I get asked as an artist. The answer is 6.75hours..... just kidding. I don't know!! Every painting has its own story and its own flow. There are days in the studio when everything just goes perfectly. The energy is great, the music is perfect, my mood is elevated and everything just aligns. On those days, I can create a painting in a matter of hours.
But then there are other days, when you wake up and know that it's not going to be a good day, when doubt might creep in, where the paint just doesn't want to do as it's told, and when I can't get into the moment. On those days it might take me much longer to work a painting. Sometimes a painting can sit in my studio for weeks until finally everything gels and all of a sudden it looks exactly the way it's supposed to look. Painting can be unpredictable, and my moods and energy definitely affect the way things go in the studio. Painting is very emotionally driven for me and I have to allow myself to go with the flow of the day. So here, for your viewing pleasure, is a time lapse of the first stage of a new commission. This is just step 1, with at least 3-4 more stages to go. And I can confirm that today was a good painting day!

So back in 2014 I created my first series of Ink works. It was partly due to the exploration and experimentation of a new medium, and partly because I wanted to create something which could produce brighter and bolder colours than acrylic paint.
As soon as I started playing with these alcohol inks, I fell in love. They allowed me to further explore the use of bright and bold color in my work, and I love the flow and the natural shapes inks create as they naturally flow on the specially designed art paper. They also proved popular with my collectors and sold out pretty quickly. So here they are again, I have just released a new series of 14 original inks with more to come soon. Here's a little teaser....... head to the store (or click the image) to see the whole range. I am currently completely obsessed with this new abstract series called the "Layers" series of works. A few years ago I created the first Layers work, which was actually part of a Spring range and I have only just revisited it recently, it's been calling me..
Seeing how the colours interact and work together is so exciting. Each layer tells its own story and allows hints of the previous layers to come through. To me this series explores who we are as people. We aren't just what you see on the inside, we are all made up of so many layers. Some easy to understand, some a little more complicated, but you don't truly get to know someone until you start to peel away these strips, one at a time, to truly see what's beneath the surface. I have just added a few of these new paintings to my online store, and am also working on adding them to my Open Edition print series. I hope you like them! This month I was approached by UGG Since 1974 to create a one of a kind Ugg Boot! This was to celebrate the launch of their new Melbourne store in Little Collins Street. The UGG is currently on display in store for the next few weeks and will then be auctioned off with proceeds going to charity. It was a really exciting (and challenging) opportunity, and I didn't really have too much time to think about it. So I decided the best approach was to put "me on a boot". So here they are, the response has been so great and I know many of you have been asking where to order a pair. Well for now, there is only one pair available, but you never know what the future might hold. I hope you like them.
OK, I will admit, I am probably not the best at blogging. It's been a little while since the last blog, well a long time since the last blog but things have been a little HECTIC. The last few months have been spent furiously painting, creating new art series, dealing with new retailers and some exciting new developments which I can't quite share with you just yet. But in the meantime, I am happy to say that my IT Manager (who just so happens to also be ME) has finally got the online store up and running. There will be plenty of new artworks and prints which will be added, but for now I am just really pleased to be able to tick this off the extensive "TO DO LIST". I'd love to know what you think of it and if you have any suggestions for improvements.
If you follow me on instagram or Facebook you probably have seen the new series, but if you haven't here it is. It's called Cactus Jam and it is a cute little series of 5 original paintings which have been framed and are ready to hang. All are up on the store (of course!) Enjoy! Last week was a very busy week for me! Not only was I trying to finish a special commission piece (which is now finished, yay!) I was also out seeing a couple of beautiful stores who are now stocking some of my paintings. I'm hoping to have a few more on board in the next couple of months. So if you are in Melbourne make sure you pop down to Mood Home Brighton or Woodenfern Gallery Red Hill. Both are very different stores who stock beautiful homewares. All details are under Stockists section on my website. And now this week I am having a painting week. I have so many ideas for my next projects, just need to make sure I can decipher which idea is for which artwork and not jumble them all into one. So exciting!! Hope you have a wonderful week. Sabi x
We all try and do our best when it comes to giving back to the community, or to support a charity which has a special meaning to us. This week I get to do my small part and donate a painting to SecondBite's Trivia night. SecondBite exists to provide access to fresh, nutritious food for people in need across Australia. I hope they have a successful night. For more info go to www.secondbite.org About a week ago, I posted on my FB page that I was in a "metallic and neutral" kind of mood. Well as a direct result of that I came up with my latest painting, a piece titled "Metallic Bark". I really like this painting. The gorgeous metallic colours shine in the light, the reflections are different from every angle. It's a really interesting painting, a little different from my normal colourful work, but it's nice to step out of the box and do something different. But then again, what is "normal?" This is the year to try new things and to step outside of the comfort zone of everyday life. Come on, lets all give it a go, try something new, you never know you may just like it!
I know 2014 is barely underway, but it's so nice to be able to complete my first painting of the year. "Emerge" is about entering a new year with fresh hope, it's about a feeling deep down in your centre that tells you that good things are on their way and that it's going to be a great journey. "Emerge" allows greens, blues, reds, pinks and oranges to play with each other in a cloud of soft fairy floss. I hope you enjoy it. It's day 4 of the New Year, and it already feels to me like things are in full swing. It's so exciting and I feel like there's a special buzz in the air. Do you feel it too? From comments I've read, 2013 was a bad year for many people (me included) so I think there is a lot of hope and expectation from 2014, let's hope it can deliver.
I would love for this to be a positive year for everyone, and I'd love to know about anything positive that happens to YOU. Please tell me know about the great things, no matter how big or small. On a professional note, I'm really happy to have been notified that two of my paintings (Aqua Fusion & Red Sea) will be displayed at the Mornington Art Show from 18-27 January at the Peninsula Community Theatre. It's a huge thrill. For now it's back to the studio! |
